Submission Guidelines

The New England Psalter publishes poetry, prose, prayer, liturgy and art that takes the complex life of Christian faith seriously.

We accept the following:

Poetry — Send up to five poems in a single document, ten pages maximum.

Prose — Fiction and creative nonfiction between 1,000 and 5,000 words. Flash under 1,000 words may be submitted up to three pieces at a time in a single document.

Prayer & Liturgy — Original prayers, collects, litanies, responsive readings, and other liturgical texts for private or corporate worship. Send up to five pieces in a single document, ten pages maximum. We welcome work suited to the seasons of the church year, as well as prayers for occasions and needs not always named in traditional liturgies. Adaptations of existing liturgical forms are welcome if the reworking is substantially your own; please note the source that shaped the piece.

Art — Original visual work in any medium, including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, and mixed media. Send up to five images as high-resolution files (JPEG, PNG, or TIFF, 300 dpi preferred). Include a title, medium, and dimensions for each piece. We consider work for both interior pages and cover art, and welcome pieces that engage the life of faith in any register.

Simultaneous submissions are welcome. Please withdraw the piece by emailing us immediately if it's accepted elsewhere; for multi-poem submissions, note in the withdrawal message which poems remain available. Please wait for a response before submitting again, with the exception of one submission per genre at a time.

Reading periods

We read in all seasons. We aim to publish two issues per year (Spring and Fall).

Response Time

We aim to respond within twelve weeks. If you haven't heard from us after fourteen, please query editor@newenglandpsalter.org.

Rights & Compensation

With respect to poetry, prose and art, The New England Psalter acquires first publication rights, in print and online; we do not accept previously published work, including pieces posted publicly online. All rights revert to the author upon publication, and we ask only to be credited if the work appears elsewhere later. We keep accepted work in our online archive.

With respect to liturgy and prayer, we believe these are owned by the community. We only ask for a right to continue publishing online and in print but do not take any ownership rights in the work.

We are currently unable to offer payment.
